From a very early age, Selena stood out from others around her. As the youngest child of Abraham and Marcella Quintanilla, Selena life revolved around music. Her father decided to teach his children music "to keep them out of trouble" and because it was his first love. Being that he had been a singer when he was younger, he was very proud of his children, especially the quality of his youngest daughter's voice. He said from the moment he heard her sing, he knew she could do anything and not just from a proud papa's point of view, but also from a musician's point of view. Selena had a natural quality to her powerful voice which only got better as she grew up.
Around the time Selena was 9 years old, her family went through several hardships. Abraham had left the Dow Chemical Plant where he had been a shipping clerk. His restaurant, Papagayos, was broke and the family had to move. Now it was up to Selena y Los Dinos, her new band, to support the family. Selena said that things were tough because she knew the whole family was depending on the money that was made, but she knew she had to do it. Her brother, AB, said that you name it they had to do it because they had to get by. But in the process of taking whatever they could get, the Quintanillas built quite a following that would prove more than just a next meal.
