As Selena grew up, her shows became more and more popular. Not only was Selena a strikingly beautiful girl, but she had way of making everyone she met feel special. A playful attitude and bright smile along with her upbeat music and trademark dance moves, Selena's concerts attracted more and more people. Around the time she 13 years old, Selena released "Oh Mamá". The single didn't sell too well, but the extensive airplay of the song led to Selena's first appearance on the Johnny Canales Show. Then when she was about 15, she won her first Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist and Female Performer of the Year. It was a huge honor and one that Selena swept for years to come. It was at the awards show that Selena was always quick to joke but also give credit where credit was due. Her acceptances speeches were always the highlights of the events, well those and her performances of course. As luck would have it, it was one of these awards show performances that launched her career even farther. Jose Behar, then the leading force behind the Latin movement at EMI, attended one of these events in search of new talent. He said that he actually about to leave when the room came alive and everyone was really starting to get into the next performer. He was so impressed by Selena's performance that he had to meet her that night. It didn't take long before she got a contract with EMI Latin.
